We’re proud to share our approach to manufacturing with you, because we believe that transparency is key to building trust with our customers. Here’s a closer look at how we bring our products to life:
1. Design Creation
Developing the design is the initial stage of creating hand-block-printed textiles and an extremely vital one.
Such designs follow deeply traditional norms but remain endlessly varied; they must look good repeated along fabric and also make sure each color can be printed separately (because every shade needs its own block). The ultimate pattern has to balance beauty with practicality: it should stay clear-looking, symmetrical, and well-aligned once carved into wood blocks used for printing.
2. Block Carving
Block carving is a particularly painstaking craft where skilled artisans engrave designs onto the surface of blocks by hand. These are usually made from seasoned teak wood. Because each color in a design requires its block (meaning many blocks may be necessary), cutters need to work with absolute precision so everything aligns perfectly during printing.
The process involves transferring the chosen image onto the wooden block; then, using sharp tools, workers carve away parts around raised areas that will hold onto fabric dye when stamped. Intricate details demand expert skill, and a finely carved block can be used over and over again for many years: this makes them valuable assets indeed within hand block printing workshops.
3. Fabric Preparation
Getting the fabric ready is a big step in making sure it soaks up dye well and that prints stay put for ages.
First things first, the fresh fabric– usually cotton or linen– gets a really good wash. This strips away starch dirt plus any leftover chemicals.
It might then have a soak in a mordant solution alum is common, especially with natural dyes. This helps the colours fix better.
After its bath the fabric is dried in the sun and ironed to get rid of any creases.
Creating this nice smooth surface is super important for block printing it stops smudges and uneven dye spots too.
4. Color preparation
Color preparation for dyes involves mixing pigment powders with natural or synthetic dyes.
Thickeners are added so the color has the right consistency along with binders to make sure it sticks well– but you must also be careful to keep things in balance!
An artisan will weigh everything out precisely before blending; this way, colours stay true over time and application remains smooth (each shade prepared separately then poured into felt-lined trays).
Blocks used for printing soak up their share evenly thanks to this method.
If too thick or thin, prints can look fuzzy meaning details lose sharpness– although correct mixture leads to bright patterns that endure fabric wear.
5. Block Printing
Block printing, an age-old craft, sees artisans stamp patterns onto fabric with hand-carved blocks. The fabric lies smooth on a padded table; the block’s dipped in dye then pressed down.
For multi-colored designs requiring different blocks for each shade, these craftspeople excel at lining up every stamp just right. This demands a steady hand plus great attention to detail so patterns stay consistent. After printing’s done, the fabric waits till dry for the next steps.
6. Drying & Curing
After block printing, the fabric is allowed to dry naturally— usually in shaded airiness to stop colors fading from direct sun rays.
Once totally dry the fabric goes through curing to set the colors. Depending on the dye type this might mean heat-setting with a press or steaming the cloth. Curing makes sure colors bond well with fibers boosting durability and wash-fastness. This step is vital for getting prints that stay bright and keep their quality through time.
7.Washing and Finishing
In washing and finishing, leftover dyes, printing pastes, and chemicals must be removed from the cloth.
To make sure that the colors stay vibrant and do not bleed, after printing on fabric it is washed with cold water– sometimes using mild soap as well. Once this step has been completed there is nothing left to do but dry it in sunshine! Ironing then follows to give a smooth finish.
Additionally finishing touches such as trimming neat edges, hemming seams, or adding decorative elements may be included– So every item looks its best!
This final step guarantees that each garment meets our high standards for quality: being clean with fast colors; ready either for immediate use or packaging.
8.Checking, Packaging & Shipping
Once finishing is done, every product goes through a meticulous quality check– looking for any printing errors, color inconsistencies, fabric defects, or stitching problems. Only perfect pieces make it through to packaging.
Products are folded neatly and packed with eco-friendly materials like kraft paper cloth wraps or recyclable plastic. Labels tags and care instructions are attached. Finally items are sorted by size or order placed securely in boxes and prepped for shipping.
Proper checking and thoughtful packaging ensure the products arrive with customers in impeccable condition ready to be used or sold right away.
